Second star rising - where are the supermodels of the 80s and 90s now?

© Icqurimage 2007

At the dawn of their lives it is natural to expect that many young models will give little thought as to what they will do when the sun begins to set on their careers. Although many models productively combine some modeling with a more 'conventional' career, parallel success within two full-time occupations is difficult, if not impossible. Most leading models find that modeling becomes their primary activity, especially if they are to enjoy any work-life balance. While education and modeling often seem to blend harmoniously, college saps both time and money, ultimately serving only as a means to an end. Certainly many of today’s models will eventually go on to become tomorrow's top lawyers, fashionistas, designers, entrepreneurs, or contented homemakers, but what inspiration can we draw from the supermodels of the eighties and nineties? In their prime, Cindy Crawford, Elle Macpherson, Pamela Anderson, Jordan, Linda Lusardi, Naomi Campbell, Janice Dickinson & Tyra Banks were household names, adorning the bedroom walls and coffee tables of countless millions, although most have since faded to memory. So what drove these women to go from being supermodels to embarking upon a second successful career? After all, they had made their fortunes and could easily have chosen to settle down in comfort, basking in the warm afterglow of their fame. Good fortune might well have been a factor in their ascension, but back-to-back successes within two careers is not down to luck. Curious as to what had become of our former leading ladies, we decided to look into their second career choices as an inspiration to the Internet generation.

Many might question the value of stargazing, but they do chart a shining path for us to follow. Some illustrious supermodels from the past chose the natural progression from modeling to fashion company owner, starting their own studio, agency, or label. What is interesting is that the ones who made a successful career transition seem to have diversified before they came to the end of their natural modeling careers. All are highly active and motivated people, determined to succeed in professional life after modeling, even though they had already achieved financial security and many options of secure marriage. Some have become entrepreneurs focusing on a range of lifestyle products from cosmetics and lingerie to furniture and fitness, while others have evolved to become TV personalities, actresses, social activists, restaurateurs, night club owners, authors, producers, or even a combination of the above. Differences aside, they all had the drive to succeed and to define their own destinies...
